 Assam Transitions to Door-to-Door Census Operations After Strong Online Response

DISPUR — Assam has officially entered the next phase of its demographic charting as the state completed its online Self-Enumeration window and launched a massive door-to-door Houselisting and Housing Census. The physical enumeration drive, which began on 17 August 2026, marks the first major field operational deployment for the Census 2027 cycle. 

According to data released by the Directorate of Census Operations, Assam saw a robust response during the digital phase, which concluded on 16 August 2026. More than 11.64 lakh households across the state successfully logged on to the official portal to self-enumerate. Among the state’s administrative divisions, the districts of Cachar, Sribhumi, and Kokrajhar recorded the highest levels of online citizen participation. With the digital window now closed, thousands of trained field enumerators have been deployed across Assam’s towns and villages to visit physical households. This door-to-door phase focuses on comprehensive house-listing and mapping building structures, setting a structural foundation for the final population count. Field operations are scheduled to run until 15 September 2026. Biswajit Pegu, the Director of Census Operations for Assam, emphasized that the ongoing field exercise operates under a strict principle of "No Omission, No Duplication" to ensure an airtight registry.

Addressing public privacy concerns, Pegu reassured residents that all data collected during both the online and physical phases remains strictly confidential. Under the statutory provisions of the Census Act, 1948, information collected during the census is legally protected and cannot be used as admissible evidence in a court of law, ensuring it is utilized solely for national planning and statistical analysis.

State authorities have urged the public to cooperate fully with visiting enumerators over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth completion of the drive ahead of the final 2027 population enumeration.
