Centre Approves ₹5,000 Crore Housing Package for Flood-Affected Assam; 3.8 Lakh PMAY-G Houses Sanctioned
New Delhi, August 26, 2026: In a major relief measure for flood-affected people in Assam, the Central Government has approved housing assistance of nearly ₹5,000 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G).
The approval is expected to provide new houses to around 3.8 lakh eligible rural families affected by the recent floods in the state. The decision was discussed during a meeting between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi.
3.8 Lakh Houses Approved Under PMAY-G
According to reports, the Centre has formally approved approximately 3.8 lakh new PMAY-G houses for Assam, involving an investment of nearly ₹5,000 crore.
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan handed over the approval documents to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The Centre has also assured Assam that additional houses will be sanctioned for eligible families in flood-affected areas after the damage assessment and beneficiary survey are completed.
PMAY-G Survey Period Extended
To ensure that eligible flood-affected families are not left out of the housing assistance programme, the survey period has been extended by 15 days.
Families whose houses were damaged by the floods will be identified through the survey, and eligible beneficiaries will receive assistance under PMAY-G according to the scheme's rules.
Housing Support for Tea Garden Workers
The Centre has also announced that eligible tea garden workers in Assam can receive benefits under PMAY after receiving land pattas.
A digital survey will be conducted to identify eligible beneficiaries, with the aim of expanding access to permanent housing among tea garden communities.
Additional Support for Farmers
The meeting also focused on the impact of floods on agriculture and rural livelihoods.
Action plans worth around ₹832.70 crore have reportedly been approved under the Agriculture Unnati Yojana and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) for flood-affected farmers. Additional assistance has also been approved for agricultural mechanisation and horticulture-related activities.
Centre Assures Continued Support to Assam
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the Central Government would continue to support Assam during the flood crisis and assist in rehabilitation and rebuilding.
The latest housing and agricultural measures are aimed at helping affected families rebuild their homes, restore livelihoods and recover from the impact of the floods.
